Cooked carrots are healthy side dishes. Packed with fiber and beta-carotene, carrots offer a low-calorie dish to compliment many meals. A half a cup of carrots has only 27 calories. Add variety and new tastes to cooked carrot side dishes by preparing glazes that use simple ingredients likely already stocked in the kitchen.

The described glazes are added to the carrots once fully cooked, whether boiled or steamed, and then drained of water. The measurements are for four servings or five cups of thinly sliced carrots. Alter the recipes if less or more servings are required for the particular meal.

Lemon-Glazed

A lemon juice mixture added to the carrots creates a tangy taste that compliments the vegetables. The carrots can simply be tossed in the saucepan with one tablespoon of lemon juice. A lemon glaze can be created by adding a few more steps.

Melt one quarter cup of butter in a saucepan set at low heat. Add one quarter cup of sugar and one teaspoon grated lemon rind. Melt the sugar and then add in the carrots. Stir constantly to cover the carrots.

Brown Sugar Coating

A brown sugar-based glaze offers a sweet taste with a slightly thicker glaze than the lemon mixture. Again, the recipe is for four servings. Combine one tablespoon of butter with one tablespoon of brown sugar over medium heat. Once mixed well, likely under five minutes, add the carrots and toss until covered with the glaze.

Honey-Glazed

Honey-glazed carrots are another sweet way to dress up carrots for a side dish. Place the drained carrots into a large bowl. Add two tablespoons of honey and half a tablespoon of grated orange rind to the bowl. Toss together the ingredients. Here is a quick, easy way to liven up cooked carrots.

Orange Sauce

The ingredients for the orange sauce are orange juice (the primary portion), honey, butter, and orange rind. In a saucepan on medium heat, combine two tablespoons of the juice with two tablespoons honey, one tablespoon butter, and one teaspoon grated orange rind.

Add the carrots and cook until fully coated. Orange juice contains Vitamin C and adds a tangy flavor to the carrots.

Glazes are a great way to add variety to meals. The listed recipes are quick and easy methods. Add pepper and salt if desired, according to personal taste. Chopped parsley can also be added after all ingredients are combined as a way to add flavor and visual interest.
